How to detox your home — starting with what actually matters

Some household toxins are a real, documented risk. Others are pure marketing. This site sorts one from the other, and tells you where to start — and most of it costs nothing.

Three things most people don’t know about their own house

The biggest risk is invisible

Radon is linked to an estimated 21,000 lung cancer deaths a year in the US — the leading cause among people who’ve never smoked. A test costs less than a takeaway. Almost nobody does one.

The best fix is already installed

Cooking is the largest routine source of fine particles in most homes. The extractor hood above your stove is the most underused health device you own. Running it every time is free.

The loudest products do nothing

Detox foot pads turn brown when held over a steaming kettle — no feet required. Ionic footbaths discolour the water with nobody sitting there. Your concern is right. Those products are the wrong answer to it.

Where to start, in the order that matters

Ranked by the strength of the evidence and how much each step actually reduces your exposure — not by what’s most profitable to recommend.

1. Water

The strongest evidence, the clearest fix, and the only category where you can verify a product’s claim rather than trust it. Find out what’s in your water before buying anything.

2. Air

Ventilation beats filtration, and it’s free. A purifier earns its place only when there’s a source you can’t remove — and it should be sized by CADR, not the box.

3. Kitchen

It matters least of the three, and the marketing is loudest. Replace things as they wear out rather than in a panic. Here’s what genuinely warrants attention.

Why this site is different

  • Free first. Roughly half of what’s worth doing costs nothing. It comes first on every page.
  • Sourced. Health claims link to government agencies, peer-reviewed research, or standards bodies — not to a news story about a study.
  • Honest about uncertainty. Where the science isn’t settled, the page says so instead of picking the scarier answer.
  • Ranked by evidence, not commission. The category that pays this site the most is ranked last. Here’s how that works.
